For SEO purpose you can optimize your images with alt text and most important your image name should be match with alt text.
The following are the tools for image optimization
1. smush.it!
2. RIOT
3. PNGOUT
4. Online Image Optimizer
5. SuperGIF

Never used any of the 'tools' listed and still manage to get traffic via image search

It really is about what you name your image files and the alt tags you give your images and the words around your images. You really do not need to go more techie than that
